Building Communities through Anglicare's Mobile Community Pantry

Care NewsOctober 23, 2024

In the midst of Australia’s economic and housing crisis, many are facing the unthinkable choice of sacrificing basic needs, like groceries, to make ends meet. Recognising this growing need, Anglicare launched the Mobile Community Pantry in April 2016, a program that delivers affordable food directly to communities in need. Since then, it has become more than just a food service - it’s a source of connection and hope.

David Traill, Care and Connections Minister at Stanhope Anglican Church, has witnessed this transformation first-hand. "We have seen the Pantry grow from just three people initially to over 25 people here at Stanhope," said David. Along with his dedicated team of volunteers, David is committed to expanding this vital ministry. Their efforts aren’t just about handing out groceries - they’re about building a community where everyone feels supported and valued.

In August, in the middle of winter, Savin Prasad, Fundraising Manager, joined forces with Front Line Staff to experience the program’s profound impact first-hand. He drove the van to churches across Sydney, served clients, and chatted over a cup of tea.

But the Pantry’s impact goes beyond groceries. “People come for the food but stay for the community,” David explained. Volunteers regularly set up morning tea, allowing shoppers to chat, connect, and build relationships. “That’s really what this ministry is about - bringing people together.” Some people travel for half an hour on the bus to not miss Mobile Community Pantry – a service made possible by our donors - a place that offers both nourishment and a place to belong.

Anglicare acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original and ongoing custodians of the lands and waters on which we live and work.

Inspired by the gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ, Anglicare's vision for reconciliation is a nation in which Australia's First Peoples are restored in dignity, respect, empowerment and opportunity.
