Your guide to residential aged care

When youre struggling to live independently, its time to consider full-time support.

Residential aged care provides personalised care for your health and wellbeing, 24 hours a day. That means you’ll have the help you need to continue living an enriching and social life you deserve.

Assessing your eligibility

If you’re considering a move to residential aged care, the first thing you need to do is book a free, comprehensive assessment with an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). Your ACAT assessment will determine the level of care you require, along with your eligibility for residential aged care

Step 1: Book your ACAT assessment

To book your ACAT assessment, visit myagedcare.gov.au or call 1800 200 422. Let them know you’re considering a move to residential aged care and that you need to determine your eligibility. ACAT will organise a time for your appointment and tell you how to prepare.

Step 2: Know what to expect at your ACAT assessment

Your ACAT assessment is free and may take place in your home or on the phone. Your assessor will talk to you about your needs and might also ask for your permission to follow up with anyone else who currently provides care for you. It is recommended that you have a trusted family member or friend with you on the day of your assessment

Step 3 Understand your costs

Once ACAT confirms your eligibility for residential aged care, the next step is to understand how much it will cost you. While the Australian Government may subsidise some of the cost of your residential aged care, you may also need to contribute. To determine how much you will have to pay, you’ll need to complete an income and asset form so Services Australia (Centrelink/DVA) can determine the level of your contribution.
