Basketball and the ‘Assist’: How Anglicare Supports Communities

Care NewsJanuary 15, 2025

I'm not much of a basketball expert, but as a mother of four I have been a cheerleader on the sideline at hundreds of games. I cheer for baskets but I cheer louder for assists. It's the move when one player sets up the shot for another, making the moment happen without claiming the spotlight. At Anglicare, we're privileged to assist real heroes: parents, foster carers, and individuals who create strong, loving, and safe foundations for their families.

Some of the most meaningful family moments are shared around the dining table. Food is more than nourishment; it brings people together. But for many families, the cost-of-living crisis has made home and food a source of stress and uncertainty. Anglicare helps ease this burden, ensuring families can still create lasting memories over a meal.

Foster carers, with extraordinary compassion, open their homes to children in need, offering the love and stability every child deserves. Anglicare is privileged to walk alongside these carers, offering guidance so they can focus on their life-changing work.

For families escaping domestic violence, rebuilding a safe home takes bravery and time Anglicare's trauma-informed care counselling help families create new beginnings. Together we celebrate milestones like this mother's experience & "l knew I had come a long way in my recovery when I wouldn't wake up feeling anxious every day and when I had the ability to open up our home to my children's friends. I felt alive again."

In 2024, we were committed to delivering 'the assist' for families in need, helping them reconnect, rebuild, and thrive. In 2025, we'll continue this mission, inspired by their courage and your generosity. May the year ahead bring shared meals, meaningful conversations, and moments of peace with the ones you love and practical assists to whoever needs them.
