Anglicare Sydney welcomes the introduction to Parliament of the new rights-based Aged Care Bill, including the new Support at Home program with additional funding, and the response to the Aged Care Taskforce.
Anglicare Sydney CEO, Simon Miller, said: “I’m pleased that the Government, with bipartisan support, has reached this important milestone.
“This once in a generation package of reform will improve care for people living at home, support new investment in aged care and ensure a strong, sustainable aged care sector for senior Australians. It is a critical step for seniors, their families and the workers who provide amazing care each and every day.
“While this is long-awaited, it has been important that the Government and Opposition have listened to many stakeholders, including advocates, care workers, aged care providers, older Australians, their families and community members.
“Importantly, we are pleased to see the removal of criminal penalties which was understandably of concern to many workers in the sector. We are now considering the other provisions of the Bill.
“This new rights-based Aged Care Act provides the clarity and certainty the sector requires to move forward, and it will help providers to deliver the best possible care for older Australians now and for future generations.
“With an ageing population, it’s more critical than ever to invest in a person-centred and financially sustainable aged care system that provides dignity, respect and care. A system that supports people to age with grace in their own home and with freedom of choice and personal agency,” he said.
Anglicare Sydney looks forward to further engagement on implementation of these reforms including Support at Home to deliver better outcomes for all those in need of care as they age.
