Corporate Social Responsibility Policy

Guiding Principles

  • Anglicare is working toward eradicating any modern slavery in its own operations and supply chains and expects the same commitment from its staff and Suppliers.
  • Eradicating modern slavery requires constant vigilance given the issue can manifest itself in a number of ways including poor working standards, and payment of under award wages.
  • Given the possible cross-cultural impact of this policy, Anglicare looks to change behaviours gradually through co-operation and vigilance.
  • Improve the quality of the environment and reduce our impact whilst understanding that we have a role and responsibility in ensuring that our work has a minimal impact on the environment, to benefit   the health and wellbeing of our society and world.

Policy

Anglicare’s Corporate and Social Responsibility Policy aims to protect the environment, drive sustainability, and promote community and social responsibility when implementing programs to support the community. We have the following objectives to guide our decisions:

Anglicare commits to eliminating slavery and human trafficking within its supply chains and operations as soon as reasonably possible.

Anglicare commits to taking into account environmental sustainability in its purchasing decisions, including the reduction of carbon emissions, reduction of plastics and pollutants and the minimisation of waste.

This policy will apply to all Anglicare staff, and suppliers including their employees, agents, volunteers, contractors, consultants and business partners.

Modern Slavery

Due to the hidden nature of modern slavery, the process of identifying and eradicating it from it from Anglicare supply chains and operations will develop incrementally and higher costs may result from implementation.

Suppliers tendering for Anglicare contracts over $1M will be required to certify to Anglicare their compliance to the Anglicare Code of Practice, which requires them to:

  • implement a policy within their workplace committing to 12 anti-slavery principles
  • establish a process to monitor compliance with the anti-slavery principles; and
  • take action to remediate any breaches they are found to have committed.

Suppliers with total turnover of more than $100M per annum will be required to certify to Anglicare their compliance with the Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) (the Act).

Anglicare may at its discretion give preference in future works and orders to Suppliers who can demonstrate compliance with this policy.

Environmentally Sustainable

Anglicare seeks to minimise its impact on the environment including reduction in the use of resources and waste generation, and by recycling where practical, taking into account cost and quality.

Anglicare will take the following factors into account in its purchasing decisions:

  • Prioritise purchase of products which are sustainable, recycled, recyclable
  • Minimise carbon emissions by reducing travel kilometres and choosing products made using renewable energy
  • Minimise packaging, waste and where possible eliminate plastics
  • Prioritise suppliers who are environmentally sustainable and local
  • Consider life-cycle impact of products, considering the durability and longevity of a product and/or its carbon footprint in use and/or environmental damage caused at the end of life
  • Avoid products which contain harmful chemicals or are hazardous to the environment and/or human health
  • Consider environmental certifications

Collaboration

Anglicare will collaborate with Suppliers and develop ongoing relationships by the principle of continuous improvement.

Welcome, rather than penalise Suppliers identifying activities that fall below acceptable sustainability standards (undertaken by themselves or their sub-contractors).

Consider a similar ethical trading standard as a reasonable alternative where Suppliers are already working towards sustainability.

Awareness and Training

Anglicare will, and we expect our Suppliers to ensure that all relevant people are provided with appropriate training and guidelines to implement the requirements of these principles.

Monitoring and Verification

Anglicare will, where appropriate, provide reasonable access to relevant information, premises, workers (through interviews), and cooperate in any assessment against this principle – using reasonable endeavours to ensure that sub-contractors do the same.

Social Procurement

Anglicare will purchase from Suppliers that support, employ or are owned by minorities or marginalised groups. Social procurement can help support marginalised communities and reduce disadvantage. These Suppliers may include, for example:  social enterprises, Indigenous suppliers, and small, medium, and regional suppliers.

Bases of Discretion

Anglicare may at its discretion choose to not contract with suppliers who cannot satisfy its policy requirements.

Anglicare acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the original and ongoing custodians of the lands and waters on which we live and work.

Inspired by the gospel of reconciliation in Jesus Christ, Anglicare's vision for reconciliation is a nation in which Australia's First Peoples are restored in dignity, respect, empowerment and opportunity.
