Feel the music

For many of us, music is one of life’s great, simple pleasures. However, for those of us who never learned how, the idea of making it seems a tall ask. Fact is, it’s never too late to take up an instrument, find your singing voice, or enjoy performing.

Like anything, building musical skills takes time, practice and dedication. This comes with great satisfaction—every new chord, melody or note learned provides a sense of achievement. As they come together, the act of making music can lead to a ‘flow state’—that rare mental state of being completely focused on an activity, without distractions or self-consciousness. Playing regularly is good for memory and dexterity too.

Making a move here can be a path of self-discovery, revealing the performer inside you —even if it’s just with friends on the weekend. This is your time pick up a guitar, learn piano or join a choir. The music is in you.

Meet Ernest

Ernest Edwards

Choir Member

Ernest may be one of the few people who’s happy to hear Christmas Carols all year round. In fact, it was the community Christmas Carols in the garden that reignited his love for singing.

Along with his wife, Ernest is now a proud member of the village choir. “Music has always been in my life. My mother played piano, and I was involved in church choirs from a young age,” Ernest says. “We hadn’t really been on stage for about 60-odd years, so getting involved again was something special.”

At 87, Ernest is embracing every opportunity to sing, stay active, and engage. The village choir isn’t just a pastime, but a way to connect and find joy. “We’ve got 365 holidays a year now, so I do what I love, and music is one of those things,” he says. “Without music, it would be different. But with music, it just helps.”

And some words of advice for those who don’t know if they can hold a tune— “Not everybody can sing, but everyone can enjoy music and have fun with it,” says Ernest. If not the choir, maybe it’s learning an instrument, joining a dance class, or going to see a performance with some friends. Because after all, music is the great connector.
